Seismic Retrofit With Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer(FRP)

Seismic Reinforcement Ideas: the reinforcement idea of this project is mainly to improve the ductility of the structure, supplemented by improving the rigidity of the structure. The specific method is: the side pillars are reinforced by hoop winding and pasting carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP).

Project Overview 

The existing building was built in 1961 and is composed of the Zhongwen main building and side buildings on both sides. The plan shape is "H". The main building is divided into three parts by two seismic joints. The main building in the middle is the office area, as shown in the figure, there is 1 underground floor, 6 floors above ground, and side buildings at both ends. The main body of the building is a cast-in-place reinforced concrete frame structure with cast-in-place floor slabs. The foundation is an independent foundation under the column. The original cement concrete has a low strength grade, the columns are C20 concrete, the beams and slabs are C15 concrete, and the reinforcement is grade I steel.

The Goal of Reinforcement

Improve the seismic performance, the seismic grade is 8 degree III site, the design seismic group is the first group, the design seismic acceleration is 0.2g, and meets the requirements of current national codes.


Seismic Reinforcement Ideas

The reinforcement idea of this project is mainly to improve the ductility of the structure, supplemented by improving the rigidity of the structure. The specific method is: the side pillars are reinforced by hoop winding and pasting carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP). Due to the relatively large load on the center column, the method of planting steel bars and enclosing concrete to increase the cross-section is used for reinforcement.
