Calculate Amount Of Carbon Fiber Reinforcing Columns And Beams

How To Calculate The Total Amount Of Carbon Fiber When Reinforcing Columns And Beams?

Today, we received an inquiry from Nigeria asking if we have carbon fiber. He wants to reinforce columns and beams.

We asked him how many quantity of carbon fiber he needed.

He said he didn't know. He never useed carbon fiber before.

Then he sent us the dimensions of his beams and columns.

Today, let Horse calculate how many quantity of carbon fiber is needed.

Basic Parameters and Calculation Principles

Use standardized units of measurement: Convert millimeters (mm) to meters (m) to ensure that areas are in square meters (㎡).

Definition of component reinforcement surfaces:

1) Columns: Calculate based on "full coverage of all four vertical sides" (conventional column reinforcement requires coverage of the entire column shaft to resist axial compression and lateral bending). Ignore the upper and lower end surfaces.

2) Beams: Calculate based on "three load-bearing surfaces (bottom + two side surfaces)" (when the beam is bent, the bottom surface is in tension and the sides are in shear, making them the primary reinforcement area). Ignore the top surface.

Calculation of carbon fiber usage for 15 columns

1. Single Column Parameters

Cross-sectional dimensions: 450mm × 450mm = 0.45m × 0.45m

Column height: 4m

Reinforcement surfaces: 4 vertical sides (each side is "cross-sectional side length × column height")

2. Single Column Reinforcement Area

Area of a single side = Cross-sectional side length × Column height = 0.45m × 4m = 1.8㎡

Total area of 4 sides = 1.8㎡ × 4 = 7.2㎡

3. Total reinforcement area of 15 columns

Total column area = Area of a single column × Number of columns = 7.2㎡ × 15 = 108㎡

Calculation of carbon fiber usage for 25 beams

1. Single Beam Parameters

Cross-sectional dimensions: 750mm × 300mm = 0.75m (height) × 0.3m (width)

Beam length: 15m

Reinforcement surfaces: 3 load-bearing surfaces (bottom + 2 side surfaces):

Bottom: Beam width × beam length (core of the tension zone)

Side surfaces: Beam height × beam length (2, for shear and auxiliary bending)

2. Single Beam Reinforcement Area

Bottom area = Beam width × Beam length = 0.3m × 15m = 4.5㎡

Single side area = Beam height × Beam length = 0.75m × 15m = 11.25㎡

Total area of 2 side surfaces = 11.25㎡ × 2 = 22.5㎡

Total reinforcement area of 2 beams = Bottom area + 2 side areas = 4.5㎡ + 22.5㎡ = 27㎡

3. 25 Total reinforced beam area

Total beam area = area of a single beam × number of beams = 27 m2 × 25 = 675 m2

Total Carbon Fiber Usage (Including Typical Losses)

1)Theoretical Total Reinforced Area: Total Column Area + Total Beam Area = 108 m2 + 675 m2 = 783 m2

2) Construction Losses: 5%-10% of the carbon fiber sheet will be lost during cutting and gluing (based on the typical 8% loss).

3) Actual Total Usage: 783 m2 × (1 + 8%) ≈ 845.64 m2 (It is recommended to prepare 850 m2 of material to avoid losses).

We're quoting based on 850 square meters. We hope to have good news soon.
