Bridge Single Pier Reinforcement And Renovation

In the construction process of highways, continuous box girder viaducts are used, and their piers generally adopt two methods: single column pier and double column pier. Narrow bridges or ramp bridges generally use single column pier. This type of bridge has many advantages: simple structure, small footprint, strong adaptability, and good economy. However, due to the single column pier structure being a single point support, its anti overturning ability is poor when encountering overload and eccentric load simultaneously. In recent years, there have been multiple overturning accidents of single column supported beam bridges, resulting in huge economic losses and serious social impacts.


In order to improve the level of bridge safety assurance and effectively prevent accidents, highway single pier renovation and reinforcement projects have been successively carried out, and anti overturning reinforcement has been carried out for single column pier bridges that do not meet the lateral stability requirements.


During the construction process, the construction unit has developed various reinforcement plans for different situations. Some need to thicken the pier body, some need to add steel cap beams and steel plate hoops to the upper part of the pier body, some pier columns need to be thickened while installing steel cap beams, and some also need to add plate bearings and prestressed tension devices.


The reinforcement and renovation work of the single pier of the ramp bridge improves the stability and anti overturning ability of the bridge.

During the renovation process, a steel cap beam was added to the top of the original pier column, which is equivalent to adding two new support points on top of the original one, improving the bridge's lateral anti overturning ability. When encountering eccentric loads, the bridge deck will be more stable.


During the reinforcement construction process, the ramp bridge above the bridge pier does not need to be disconnected and vehicles can pass through normally.
